Eat Real Food

#5 Gluten Free Foods

This was on the list of the top five things never to buy at a health food store. It was a good reminder to me not to get excited when I see those gluten free labels slapped on processed food boxes. The price alone should make me walk the other way.

Sarah says……

Healthfood stores in my area seem to all be expanding their gluten free sections lately. Even grocery stores are adding gluten free aisles.

Gluten free went mainstream this past summer when Chelsea Clinton requested a gluten free cake be served at her wedding reception.

Don’t be fooled by the hype. Gluten free foods are not healthy and are not any better than regular store bought processed versions. Gluten free processed foods are made for folks who aren’t ready or are unwilling to switch to Real Food but are very allergic to regular processed foods. Moreover, they are ridiculously expensive and nutritionless to boot.

If you are allergic to gluten, it is much better to work on your gut health by buying and traditionally preparing Real Food rather than the band-aid approach of buying gluten free processed foods. Once you rebalance and rebuild your gut so that beneficial bacteria dominate rather than the pathogens that are in control in the gut of a gluten intolerant person, you may be delighted to find that gluten no longer bothers you!

I hope this list helps you become a much more savvy healthfood store customer. Don’t fall for the highly processed organic junk food. Buy organic produce and one to three ingredient foods such as nut butters or traditional sourdough bread at your healthfood store and you will be well on your way to loading your pantry and refrigerator with foods that will really enhance your health and not just give you a false sense of security and empty your wallet!

Snow Day

20120118-210352.jpg

My fabulous winter just got really white and slushy all in the same day. Hoping it doesn’t stick around. Naaman and Dallin had fun while it lasted. And Dallin’s baby brother decided to share his birthday with Olivia.

Pretty Amazing!

I saw this before & after on A New Found Treasure blog via Emily Clark’s blog. It was very professional looking…..major $$$ transformation……the kind you just dream about. Pretty ridiculous. Here is the before……

And here is the after……..

Crazy…..I know!

Best Winter Ever!

Tomorrow it’s suppose to be 46 degrees outside. That’s so crazy for January in Boise. I’m loving it, even though the moisture is always needed. January is usually so cold and dreary that its depressing. But this I like. I love pictures of snow covered trees…..they always look so peaceful to me…….but I like them in the mountains no the front yard:)

A New Year

20120101-160743.jpg

I was reading The Inspired Room blog and loved her little statement about her new light.

“In February I got my new dining room lantern and that has been one of my favorite improvements. I look at it every day and still LOVE IT!”

I think that is when real design is achieved….at least for me anyways. That’s one of my design goals for the new year. I tend to compromise a lot because I’m a “it’s a good deal” driven person.
So it’s definitely a challenge but I’m going to try and figure out what I really like…..and look for the good deals there. We’ll see:)

Merry Christmas!
